Delhi life

May 30, 2011 |

As an NW European I am used to a moderate climate, but now living in another climate zone I learn more about my bodies adaptability.

The last week it has been hot in Delhi, above 40 degC and that has it's effect on the people. Although in air-conditioned facilities, there is a mental pressure due to the heat and the fact you should actually not be outside. Your body tells you. Off course people behavior changes and people take it slowly, but once outside you want to fight the heat and actually not accept that it is hot. Mentally you want to push to continue what you are doing, but your body starts to complain, very subtle and then the brain gets different signals and you get frustrated. So what does your body do, it tires you out, you simple become more and more tired until you have a found an equilibrium where you still can do something and the body use less energy and cools the brain. For an energetic person like me that is frustrating, but then you start to feel the body and mind balance and understand why people act different in the hot conditions.

This adaptability is also experienced in the night, when it is less hot, but still warm.

As in many Asian countries, there are fans to create a nice wind and a monotonous sound. The wind from the fan feels refreshing in the warmth but has a continuous influence on your body, it actually does the opposite. Once I read an article that of all climate factors the wind is the most annoying to mankind, because of the sound and the effect on the body. Again a mental and physical influence. So in the night the fan is preferred above the air co to save energy and to consider our green climate, but eventually it doesn't work. The air stream of the fan does cool the body but because your the sweat is evaporating, which is the only cooling agent you have to cool the body, it doesn’t cool the body in that way. So effectively it costs you more energy to remain cool with the fan on and I thought sleeping was meant to gain energy.

Then there is the monotonous sound of the fan, it makes you nuts.

Of course you try to ignore it, but you can't. There is something unnatural in the sound and the frequency, it is not a nice waterfall or water stream. The irritation influences your mind and you won't relax, you probably wake up several times, and get more annoyed, and get less rest. After several nights this wears you out, both body and mind.

I respect our green earth a lot and although active in a so called "polluting industry"  I do my best to improve and make our earth a better place, however when I am worn out due to climate conditions, I switch on the air co at night and turn the fan off. And guess what! The first goodnight sleep for weeks.

Probably I will adapt to the climate conditions but it will take time. My body has the ability to adapt, however not with the same speed as my mind would like to. Which makes me doubt about the mind over body proverb.
